Many people imagine pilots simply choosing a straight line between two airports.
The reality is much more complicated.
The North Atlantic Organized Track Structure is designed to handle large volumes of traffic safely and efficiently. Routes can be positioned to take advantage of favorable winds and minimize unfavorable ones.
These tracks can change as weather conditions change.
In other words, the “highway” across the Atlantic isn’t a permanent road.
It is more like a constantly changing network of invisible highways.
